Day 21- Jewelry

Day 21- Jewelry

Styles and design preferences change. What you liked a few years ago, you might not be a fan of any more.

This concept is fine to most people when we are talking about clothes, but the same is true for jewelry too.

Take a look through your vast collection of necklaces, bracelets, watches, and earrings. If you see an item that you are never going to wear again, remove it from your collection.

From there, the next step is up to you. If it has sentimental value, maybe a family member would want it. If the piece contains diamonds or other gem stones, maybe you can get it turned into something that you want. If it is a piece of cheap costume jewelry, then maybe it is time to donate or trash it.

Day 20- SHOES!

Day 20- Shoes

Some of you may not be mentally ready to look at decluttering your shoe collection, but the day is here. It is time to take a close look at the piles of shoes around the house.

Do you have multiple sets of running shoes (the pair you use, the old pair, and the really really old pair)??

Do you have heels stacked in your closet that may still fit your feet, but no longer fit your personal style?

Do you have a pair of shoes that you adore, but they are stained or worn out?

GET RID OF THEM!

I’m not telling you to get rid of all of the shoes that you love….just the ones that really don’t have a purpose in your life anymore!

Day 14- Purse or Work Bag

Day 14- Purse or Work Bag

Today should be pretty easy!

  1. Take your purse or work bag and dump it on the counter.
  2. Wipe the inside and outside with disinfecting wipes.
  3. Only put back in what you use.
  4. Throw away (or recycle) the rest.

Day 13- DVDs and CDs

It is finally time to go through your DVD and CD collections. These items have a lot of personal value for many people.

Let’s be realistic though…if you haven’t used them in the past year, you don’t need them. Also, with video and music streaming services so readily available, there really is absolutely no practical reason to have dozens (or hundreds) of DVDs or CDs.

Keep a few for raining days (or for when the wifi is out), but get rid of the rest!!

For those of you that have already completed this topic, where did you take your old DVDs? Do pawn and consignment shops want these types of items?

Day 11- MUGS

excessive number of mugs

I love mugs!

This item was particularly hard for me to declutter. Of everything that I have gotten rid of in my home, this is actually one of the most recent. I put it off for so long. The reason is because I can remember where I got every single mug. Seeing some of them just makes me smile. However, I have never even had a sip of coffee out of some of them. They are of no use to me taking up room in my kitchen.

I got rid of everything except what I use on a regular basis, with one exception. The cute little penguin mug in the title image I could not part with. I use the penguin mug once or twice a year to sip hot cocoa out of while snow falls on a cold winter day. The feeling that I get curled up on the couch, even just once a year, is worth holding onto that one extra mug.

My point is, be critical and make some hard decisions, but if an item truely brings you joy, do not feel guilty holding onto it.

Day 10- Cleaning Supplies

Day 10- Cleaning Supplies

Is your cleaning supply area streamlined and organized? or is it more of a cluttered mess with half empty bottles thrown under your sink?

Today’s goal is to get rid of excessive bottles of cleaning supplies that you don’t use. You can also use today to look at cleaning tools such as rags, mops, brooms, vacuums to see if anything is no longer used or broken.

Day 9- Linens, Sheets, Towels

title image for declutter challenge. day 9 linens, sheets, towels

I hoard linens like they are made of gold.

It didn’t matter how many new sets of sheets I purchased, I would never get rid of the old ones. I would fold them up and tuck them in a box under a bed or in a closet…ya know…just in case! I would do the same thing with towels too. The old towels would just get shoved deeper into the linen closet until things were overflowing.

For today’s declutter challenge, pull all of your linens out. Put away what you actually use. Then decide if you need to keep a couple sets of sheets or towels as extras, but don’t keep multiple extras if you do not use them.

Personally, I am putting 5 sets of sheets in my trunk to get dropped off at our textile recycle bin. I also pulled two flat sheets out to keep as drop cloths for painting or home repair projects.

Day 8- Clippers, Nail Files, Tweezers

excessive number of nail clippers, tweezers, and scissors

I added this topic, because I am just amazed at how many sets of manicure supplies I have around the house. A while back, I got ‘organized’ and put them all in one place. Despite all of the items being contained to one small plastic bin, I still have absolutely no reason to have eight different tweezers when there is only one that I actually use.

Take a peak through your self care supplies. Keep what you actually use (and maybe one item as a back up). Get rid of the rest.

The list includes anything that you have multiples of such as:

  • Hair clippers
  • finger and toenail clippers
  • files
  • tweezers
  • manicure and cuticle scissors
  • combs
  • brushes
  • etc. etc. etc.

Day 7- Coats and Jackets

Day 7- Coats and Jackets

How many coats do you really need? The answer might be different for everyone (depending on where you live and how much you go outside), but odds are you probably have too many.

Open your coat closet. Pull out anything that doesn’t fit, has stains (unless it’s a work coat), or that you haven’t worn in the last year. Put it in a bag. Pop it in your car. Drop it off at the next clothing donation bin that you pass.

Day 6- Knick Knacks

Title image for day 6 of the declutter challenge. knick knacks

Day 6- Knick Knacks

Look at your shelves. Look on your cabinets. Look at your walls.

Do you love everything that you see?

If your answer is no, then why do you have it??

Knick knacks seem to be a hard thing for people to part with. Here are some tips…

When looking around your home, contemplating what to get rid of, look at each object closely. Ask yourself the following three questions.

  • Does the object have a purpose?
  • Does the item bring you joy?
  • If you saw this item in a store tomorrow, would you buy it again?

If you answer yes to any of the questions above, then keep the object.

If you answer no to all of the question, then get rid of it!!!

REMEMBER:
The fewer things we own, the fewer things we have to clean.
