Day 27- Old/Broken Games and Puzzles

Today I am coming after your childhood memories! Not really…but I know that is kind of what it feels like to get rid of toys and puzzles. Today, just focus on getting rid of things that you can obviously tell are broken, worn, or missing pieces. This will help you not feel guilty about throwing them away.

I am a huge fan of upcycling. I love turning everyday items into something new…especially if it is something that I no longer have a use for. An example is taking old puzzle pieces and using them for crafts or art. Here is a link to pinterest where there are tons of cute ideas for old puzzles.

Good luck and have fun!!

Day 19- Hats, Gloves, Scarves

gloves and winter accessories

Do you have a bin or a drawer full of mismatched gloves, random scarves, and various hats? Here in the northeast US, we are well into the winter weather. Dump out that bin of mismatched stuff. If you haven’t used it yet this winter, you don’t need it. There are, however, people that would have a need for your winter weather gear.

  • Donate your winter weather accessories to a goodwill, homeless shelter, or thrift store.
  • You could also reach out to teacher friends and see if they have a need for any extras in their classrooms for kids that are in need (or forget them).
  • Post them for free on social media and see if anyone has a need.

I have said it before, but these types of items have absolutely no value to you sitting in boxes not being used and taking up space. Think about how great it will feel to know that you are able to give these to someone that can use them.

Day 18- Multiples of Kitchen Utensils

cooking utensils in tins

How many slotted spoons does a kitchen really need? Not too long ago, I went through my kitchen and got rid a bunch of ‘clutter’. Apparently, I didn’t take a critical enough look at my kitchen utensils. I pulled everything out this morning, and boom…I have 5 different slotted spoons. I can not think of a time when I would actually have a need for all 5 of these spoons.

Instead of looking at these utensils and thinking about what I have to get rid of, I thought about which utensils I would like to keep. I looked at them and decided which ones had been used recently. Those are the ones I kept. Then, deciding what to get rid of was a not hard at all.

Forget about the ‘what if’ and the ‘just in case’. If you haven’t used it in the past year, odds are that once you get rid of it, you will never miss it.

Day 17- Vases

title image for decluttering vases

Some women see a bouquet of flowers as a sweet gesture…I see it as a waste of money.

I know, I know…I’m definitely not a hopeless romantic, but I sure am practical. My husband knows that if he wants to make a sweet gesture, it better not be store bought cut flowers that will turn brown in a few days. For this reason, I need very few vases.

I do still occasionally use a vase if I bring flowers in from the garden, but I truely have no need for the cabinet of various sized and colored vases.

Ideas for getting rid of vases include:

Donating to your local thrift store

Check to see if any brides need vases for wedding centerpieces

If they are glass or plastic, check to see if you can recycle them

Are you crafty? Repurpose a few. Check out this link on pinterest. While you’re there, hit the follow button on my profile to keep up with my pins!

Day 14- Purse or Work Bag

Day 14- Purse or Work Bag

Today should be pretty easy!

  1. Take your purse or work bag and dump it on the counter.
  2. Wipe the inside and outside with disinfecting wipes.
  3. Only put back in what you use.
  4. Throw away (or recycle) the rest.

Day 13- DVDs and CDs

Day 13- DVDs and CDs

It is finally time to go through your DVD and CD collections. These items have a lot of personal value for many people.

Let’s be realistic though…if you haven’t used them in the past year, you don’t need them. Also, with video and music streaming services so readily available, there really is absolutely no practical reason to have dozens (or hundreds) of DVDs or CDs.

Keep a few for raining days (or for when the wifi is out), but get rid of the rest!!

For those of you that have already completed this topic, where did you take your old DVDs? Do pawn and consignment shops want these types of items?

Day 12- Pens, Pencils, and Markers

Day 12- Pens, Pencils, Markers

Do you really need an entire desk drawer dedicated to dozens of writing utensils? No.

Set aside just a couple of working pens, pencils, and markers. Bundle the rest together with a rubber band and get rid of them.

If you have been following along, you have probably realized that I do not like throwing things away. Below are a few ideas of what you can do with your bundle of writing tools.

Take them to work.

Give them to a teacher.

Give them to a student.

Donate them to a public school.

Send them to The Pen Guy. He takes writing utensils that would otherwise be trash and creates art with them.

Happy Decluttering!

Day 11- MUGS

excessive number of mugs

I love mugs!

This item was particularly hard for me to declutter. Of everything that I have gotten rid of in my home, this is actually one of the most recent. I put it off for so long. The reason is because I can remember where I got every single mug. Seeing some of them just makes me smile. However, I have never even had a sip of coffee out of some of them. They are of no use to me taking up room in my kitchen.

I got rid of everything except what I use on a regular basis, with one exception. The cute little penguin mug in the title image I could not part with. I use the penguin mug once or twice a year to sip hot cocoa out of while snow falls on a cold winter day. The feeling that I get curled up on the couch, even just once a year, is worth holding onto that one extra mug.

My point is, be critical and make some hard decisions, but if an item truely brings you joy, do not feel guilty holding onto it.

Day 10- Cleaning Supplies

Day 10- Cleaning Supplies

Is your cleaning supply area streamlined and organized? or is it more of a cluttered mess with half empty bottles thrown under your sink?

Today’s goal is to get rid of excessive bottles of cleaning supplies that you don’t use. You can also use today to look at cleaning tools such as rags, mops, brooms, vacuums to see if anything is no longer used or broken.

Day 9- Linens, Sheets, Towels

title image for declutter challenge. day 9 linens, sheets, towels

I hoard linens like they are made of gold.

It didn’t matter how many new sets of sheets I purchased, I would never get rid of the old ones. I would fold them up and tuck them in a box under a bed or in a closet…ya know…just in case! I would do the same thing with towels too. The old towels would just get shoved deeper into the linen closet until things were overflowing.

For today’s declutter challenge, pull all of your linens out. Put away what you actually use. Then decide if you need to keep a couple sets of sheets or towels as extras, but don’t keep multiple extras if you do not use them.

Personally, I am putting 5 sets of sheets in my trunk to get dropped off at our textile recycle bin. I also pulled two flat sheets out to keep as drop cloths for painting or home repair projects.
