Day 27- Old/Broken Games and Puzzles

Today I am coming after your childhood memories! Not really…but I know that is kind of what it feels like to get rid of toys and puzzles. Today, just focus on getting rid of things that you can obviously tell are broken, worn, or missing pieces. This will help you not feel guilty about throwing them away.

I am a huge fan of upcycling. I love turning everyday items into something new…especially if it is something that I no longer have a use for. An example is taking old puzzle pieces and using them for crafts or art. Here is a link to pinterest where there are tons of cute ideas for old puzzles.

Good luck and have fun!!

Day 25- Perfumes and Colognes

It is hard to believe that we are 25 days into January. Doesn’t it just feel like we were celebrating the New Year?!

How are you are doing with your resolutions? Are you more organized? Do you have less clutter?

Today is a quick one! Time to minimize your perfume or cologne collection.

Today is a great day to work on some of your other declutter goals if you get time! The more you do now, the more you get to enjoy the results later!

Day 24- Old Makeup

Today is not only about decluttering, but it is also a little bit about hygiene.  Did you know that it is recommended to replace your mascara every 2-3 months?…even if it is not empty.

Take a look through your make up drawer today toss anything that is old and that you don’t use regularly.

While you’re in your makeup drawer, go ahead and was your makeup brushes too!  Your face with thank you!

Day 22- Cables, Wires, Headphones

Dear random bin full of tangled cables…

…today is your day. I don’t know what any of you do. I haven’t used any of you since I shoved you into this box. If I need something like you, I will probably just order one on amazon prime instead of trying to search this box of spaghetti wires. Oh, and you 5 pairs of random apple headphones that I have but don’t actually use, you’re gone too!

Time to declutter!

Day 19- Hats, Gloves, Scarves

gloves and winter accessories

Do you have a bin or a drawer full of mismatched gloves, random scarves, and various hats? Here in the northeast US, we are well into the winter weather. Dump out that bin of mismatched stuff. If you haven’t used it yet this winter, you don’t need it. There are, however, people that would have a need for your winter weather gear.

  • Donate your winter weather accessories to a goodwill, homeless shelter, or thrift store.
  • You could also reach out to teacher friends and see if they have a need for any extras in their classrooms for kids that are in need (or forget them).
  • Post them for free on social media and see if anyone has a need.

I have said it before, but these types of items have absolutely no value to you sitting in boxes not being used and taking up space. Think about how great it will feel to know that you are able to give these to someone that can use them.

Day 18- Multiples of Kitchen Utensils

cooking utensils in tins

How many slotted spoons does a kitchen really need? Not too long ago, I went through my kitchen and got rid a bunch of ‘clutter’. Apparently, I didn’t take a critical enough look at my kitchen utensils. I pulled everything out this morning, and boom…I have 5 different slotted spoons. I can not think of a time when I would actually have a need for all 5 of these spoons.

Instead of looking at these utensils and thinking about what I have to get rid of, I thought about which utensils I would like to keep. I looked at them and decided which ones had been used recently. Those are the ones I kept. Then, deciding what to get rid of was a not hard at all.

Forget about the ‘what if’ and the ‘just in case’. If you haven’t used it in the past year, odds are that once you get rid of it, you will never miss it.

Day 17- Vases

title image for decluttering vases

Some women see a bouquet of flowers as a sweet gesture…I see it as a waste of money.

I know, I know…I’m definitely not a hopeless romantic, but I sure am practical. My husband knows that if he wants to make a sweet gesture, it better not be store bought cut flowers that will turn brown in a few days. For this reason, I need very few vases.

I do still occasionally use a vase if I bring flowers in from the garden, but I truely have no need for the cabinet of various sized and colored vases.

Ideas for getting rid of vases include:

Donating to your local thrift store

Check to see if any brides need vases for wedding centerpieces

If they are glass or plastic, check to see if you can recycle them

Day 15- Old Medications

Day 15- Old Medications

Time to head to the medicine cabinet!

When cleaning out your medications take note of the storage instructions and the expiration dates. If you find medications that are expired or haven’t been stored properly, take a closer look to see if there are specific instructions for discarding the medications. Some medications may require additional steps for safe discarding.

For prescription medications, especially narcotics or other controlled substances, it is best to take them to a secure medication drop box. Many pharmacies and police stations have medication drop boxes.

Try this CVS dropbox link to find one near you.

Day 14- Purse or Work Bag

Day 14- Purse or Work Bag

Today should be pretty easy!

  1. Take your purse or work bag and dump it on the counter.
  2. Wipe the inside and outside with disinfecting wipes.
  3. Only put back in what you use.
  4. Throw away (or recycle) the rest.
